Absa Stadium Durban: Rugby, Soccer and Entertainment

The Absa Stadium Durban is commonly known as Kings Park to the locals. This hallowed sports ground is a firm favourite with both Durbanites and KwaZulu-Natalians from further afield who flock to the stadium to support their local rugby teams: the Sharks and the Natal Sharks. The 52000 seater stadium is used for rugby, soccer and big events like music concerts. Adjoining the stadium are a number of fields and sporting facilities, all well-patronised and offering wonderful opportunities for sports and entertainment.

Home to the Sharks Rugby

Absa Stadium Durban is a recognised international rugby test venue. The ground is used for hosting international rugby matches featuring teams from all over the world. The appearance of the stadium is arresting; with the east and west stands rearing up strong and proud much like a snake about to strike-intimidating for any team who doesn’t call Kings Park their home ground!

A number of tournaments are played throughout the rugby season, including the famed Super 14 and the well-established provincial Currie Cup contest. Kings Park hosts plenty of these matches and spiritedly supports it's Sharks teams. The Sharks are the Super 14 squad and the Natal Sharks are a separate team that play the Currie Cup. Both sides draw players from KwaZulu-Natal, and when the Sharks are not on tour for the Super 14 many of them play in the Currie Cup as well.

Post-rugby entertainment

Kings Park is renowned for its amazing post-match “vibe”. The stadium has excellent parking because there are a number of fields adjacent to it which are used for parking on match days. After the game, the festive stadium atmosphere moves out and onto the parking fields.

Families and friends often park together and after the match return to their cars to braai (barbecue), have a drink and generally enjoy post-match celebrations (and sometimes, commiserations)!

Soccer at the stadium

Local team, the Lamontville Golden Arrows compete in the South African PSL (Premier Soccer League) and play at Absa Stadium, Kings Park.

Concerts at the stadium

Absa Stadium is a great venue for concerts and many touring artists perform there to capacity crowds. The stadium is transformed with a huge stage, massive sound systems and enormous lighting rigs. Spectators stand on the field as well as sit in the stands. Musicians like Celine Dion, Bon Jovi and Michael Jackson have done shows at Kings Park and each year sees new entertainers on the stadium’s events calendar.

The Shark Cage

The Shark Cage is a Sharks merchandise shop based at Absa Stadium Durban. The shop sells a variety of products such as Sharks branded clothing for men, women and children of all ages, including toddlers. They also stock a selection of Springbok branded clothing as well.

A rich history of rugby, soccer and impressive events has made Kings Park the legendary place it is today. Visit Absa Stadium Durban to experience for yourself the festive atmosphere renowned across South Africa.
